Woman Staring at Phone Saves Child From Certain Death
Yesterday afternoon a 26 year old woman by the name of Yu Yuan allegedly saved the life a small child who was dangerously close to falling onto the subway tracks at Xierqi Station in northwest Haidian. The awe-inspiring video captured via Beijing Metro surveillance cameras clearly shows Yu, who appears to be distracted by her phone, tripping over a migrant worker’s canvas sack and then accidentally knocking a young boy backwards away from the tracks and an oncoming train.
At roughly 2:30pm Yu, who was apparently deeply engaged in a mind numbing game of Candy Crush, miraculously and aimlessly meandered into the still unnamed child and altered his path just enough to prevent the boy’s almost certain death. The event is serving as some much needed good publicity for Beijing’s ever-growing community of people who would rather stare at a cellphone screen than pay even the slightest bit of attention to the world around them.
“Over the last couple of years or so, countless videos have emerged of people staring at phone screens while obliviously walking into oncoming traffic, or plummeting into uncovered manholes, but that’s only one side of the story” claims Zhi Ruo head of PR for Tencent’s App Store. “There’s lots of unfair, biased coverage from mainstream media with regards to cellphone addiction, but it’s refreshing to finally see the other side of becoming completely lost in one’s phone screen. The fact of the matter is that there’s no real proof that not paying attention to one’s surroundings is more dangerous than it is helpful.”
When asked about the incident herself, Yu shied away from using the word “hero”, giving most of the credit to her new IPhone X and her accompanying bedazzled phone ring, which she says allows her to maintain control of the device in the face of any obstacles that she encounters while blindly stumblingly around the city. Hero or not, it’s clear that in this instance at least, Ms. Yuan and Candy Crush teamed up to help keep a young man from being Candy-Crushed.
